Because of today's technology, "Readers/Writers" are becoming the learning strategies of the past. Now, most students are "Listeners/Watchers". And as a future teacher, this is a hard transition because in education, the focus is placed on how well students can read and write. And teachers have to be dedicated to help them master those two abilities. That is one of my goals as a teacher. It is so easy for students to type on the computer, but they have a difficult time writing legibly. I will incorporate writing into my lesson plans, not only to practice handwriting, but to give my students the opportunity to become authors of their own stories. And since technology is taking over, it would be nice to keep some of the basics.
The same concept goes for reading. Students can watch a movie, or TV show and retell what happened with no problem. But students should also be encouraged to continue to read books to help increase and improve their comprehension strategies and their fluency. Knowing how to retell the sequence of events, being able to tell the characters and the setting, knowing what the main idea is are all critical reading concepts all students should and must know. And no matter how fast technology changes or how easy technology is, those are basic skills we can not afford to let become a thing of the past!
